The Founding Years Before HDF Consulting
1980-1984: Early Endeavors at Suralco
Hubertus de Freytas, fondly known as Huub, commenced his illustrious 40-year journey in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in 1980. Fresh from the AMS, he joined Suralco in the Werktuigbouw, marking the genesis of his passion for automation. A pivotal moment arose when Huub, alongside a Natin graduate, programmed a state-of-the-art lathe in the Central Machine Shop, setting the stage for his profound involvement in the world of ICT.
1984-1989: A Dive into Notarial ICT
Leaving Suralco, Huub ventured into the Notariaat of Mr. C.R. Jadnanansing, exploring the world of ICT amidst the challenges of a rapidly evolving industry. IBM, a technological giant, seemed like an elusive dream for a newcomer like Huub. However, fate smiled upon him when Huub’s entry into the world of ICT was fortuitously facilitated by Data Management’s Informatica Opleiding. This intesive course laid upon which Huub built his expertise. At Keycomp Computer Systems, Huub delved into System Administration and COBOL programming, honing skills that would become invaluable in his future endeavors.
1989-1992: EBS and System Programming
Huub’s journey continued at EBS (Energie Bedrijven Suriname), where his programming prowess shone as he rewrote the OGANE gas supply system in COBOL. Recognizing Huub’s multifaceted skills, his manager, Ir. Jacques Willemen, recommended a shift to System Programming. This period saw Huub’s resilience during a critical phase when IBM and other System Programmers left Suriname. Single-handedly, he resurrected a stalled system, earning him the trust and mentorship of his superior, Jacques. In 1992, Huub departed from EBS with an honors award and a certificate of excellence to embark on a new venture.
1992-1993: N.V. Nijros Informatiserings Consultants
In 1992, N.V. Nijros was born in 1992, a collaboration of minds including Huub, Jacques Willemen, Marnix Nijman, Jimmy Rosheuvel and Tony Janssen. The company rapidly expanded, boasting 20 employees within a year. Huub and Jacques spearheaded pivotal projects, specializing in Migrations and Infrastructure development. N.V. Nijros laid the groundwork for Huub’s understanding of freelancing consultancy. As of today, Nijros does not exist anymore, but all stakeholders are successful owners and founders of ICT companies in Suriname.
1994-1997: Freelancing and the Grit to Succeed
In 1994, Huub embarked on the path of freelance consulting, a daring move that initially faced formidable challenges. Undeterred by three months of unanswered proposals and a family with young kids to take care of, he persisted. Despite the initial hurdles, Huub’s unwavering commitment ultimately paid off as projects started streaming in, contributing significantly to renowned companies such as Shell Suriname, Kersten Concern Beheer, and Telesur.

The demand for his services eventually prompted the establishment of HDF Consulting N.V. on May 23, 1996, with Huub’s wife, Shirley de Freytas, as advisor and equal partner (HDF evedently being an abbreviation of Huub de Freytas). The journey from a one-man show to a thriving entity was a significant milestone. The company’s ethos centered on passion, dedication, and a commitment to excellence. A small team of energetic ICT enthusiasts was assembled, paving the way for the next chapter.

Building a Dream Team
Huub’s exacting standards for team members surpassed mere technical proficiency; he prioritized qualities such as passion, steadfast commitment, and harmonious collaboration within the team. This strategic recruitment approach resulted in assembling a foundational team which played a pivotal role in establishing and fortifying HDF Consulting’s prominence in the industry. Under Huub’s leadership at the helm, HDF Consulting charted a course of continuous growth and innovation. Gia demonstrated mastery in operating systems, applications, and databases, while Anusjka skillfully navigated employee management, assisted the CEO, and excelled in client relations. Rodney’s proficiency in repairing and constructing networks and Othniel’s efficiency in handling technical tasks added to HDF Consulting’s robust team. Shirley, as a strategic advisor and co-founder, enriched the company with experience, guiding its growth and fostering a familial work culture. Together, their diverse strengths laid the foundation for our success.
Weathering Economic Storms
During the tumultuous era of the early 2000s, the dot-com bubble posed formidable challenges for numerous tech enterprises globally. In Suriname, HDF Consulting faced additional hurdles exacerbated by the region’s volatile political landscape. The company adeptly weathered these dual storms by not only diversifying its services and remaining attuned to market demands but also by navigating industry with tact and resilience. Despite the adversities posed by political instabilities, HDF Consulting stood steadfast, guided by Huub’s strategic foresight and the team’s unwavering commitment to excellence. This period underscored the company’s adaptability and fortitude, reinforcing its position as a resilient leader in Suriname’s ever-evolving ICT sector.

Continuing the Legacy
In 2008, HDF Consulting welcomed its newest additions, daughters of the founder, Crystal and Marilyn, into the fold. Their journey with the company began long before, as they underwent training from the age of four, imbibing the values and skills essential to the family business. As they matured, they took on summer jobs within the company, gaining practical experience and insight into its operations. Their educational pursuits led them abroad to the Netherlands, where they furthered their studies and gained valuable work experience in the USA. Now, armed with a blend of academic excellence, international exposure, and hands-on training, Crystal and Marilyn injected fresh perspectives and innovation into the company’s endeavors. As of today, Crystal and Marilyn continue to play integral roles within HDF. Marilyn takes on the dual role of Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Operations Officer (COO). Her responsibilities encompass strategic financial planning, operational efficiency, and overall management of day-to-day business activities. With her multifaceted expertise, Marilyn plays a pivotal role in steering HDF Consulting. Meanwhile, Crystal takes charge of the Web Development Department, spearheading initiatives to maintain our company’s dedication to digital innovation and excellence.
